What makes a classic?

Someone on the internet said recently that we read with one of three goals in mind: education, entertainment or escape. If a book scores 10 out of 10 in two of the three categories, it’s likely to become a classic or already is one.

Let’s look at some classics and my ratings of them in all three categories:

Rudyard Kipling – The Jungle Book (my recent read)

Entertainment – 10; escape – 10; education – 7.

Arthur Conan Doyle – the Sherlock Holmes stories

Entertainment – 10; escape – 10; education – 6.

Jane Austen

Entertainment – 10; escape – 10; education – 7.

Terry Pratchett

Entertainment – 10; escape – 10; education – 2.

What about you and your favorite classics?
